Arvin Grant Rust, 81, passed away at home on June 13, 2009 from congestive heart failure. He was born in Duchesne County, Utah on March 8, 1928 to Zelpha Pearson and Alva George Rust. He was the fourth child out of a family of ten children. Survivors include Ellis Rust, Elouise Rust Ingleby, Allen Rust, and Claren Brandt; 23 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arvin was married June 8, 1948 to Leota Davies in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with five children: Cherryl (John) Cordova, Las Vegas, Nev; Darrell Arvin (Janice), Dammeron Valley, Utah; Grant LeRoy (Robin), Santa Clara, Utah; Jalaire Marie (Houston Barnes), Jay, Oklahoma; and Dwayne David (LaRae), Henefer, Utah.
He was later married to Alice Swimm on Dec. 31, 1997 in Seward, Alaska at St. Peter's Episcopal Church and welcomed her daughter Victoria Sandoz (Pat Thompson) into the family.
When he was about nine years old, the family had a 1930 black Chrysler with wooden-spoked wheels and "suicide" doors. When the starter began to give his father problems, the car was parked out by the wood pile. Arvin fixed it and started driving backward and forwards. "Fixing things" was to become a way of life for Arvin; so was driving.
After working as a mechanic and heavy duty equipment operator, Arvin worked for White Motor Co. and built his own truck and drove it off the line to a 30 year career of over-the-road trucking including heavy haul, 53 foot dry and refrigerated vans, hazmat tankers and finally, just-in-time freight.
Arvin was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in the bishopric of the Croydon Ward and was involved in the scouting program.
He was preceded in death by brothers: Elton Ray, Keith, Melvin, Floyd, Lowell; and a sister, Lyla.
There will be a wake with viewing and all-night vigil, held at his home on 947 24th Street in Ogden on Friday, June 19, beginning at 5 p.m.
A Graveside Service will be held Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Croydon Cemetery. Friends and family may call at the Walker Mortuary in Morgan on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
