Curtis Lawrence Hayes

June 3, 1955 — October 16, 2024

Roosevelt

Curtis Lawrence Hayes, age 69, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, in Roosevelt, Utah, surrounded by his loving family.

Curt was born on June 3, 1955, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Ronald Eugene Hayes and Julia-Ann Lawrence Hayes. He grew up in Kearns and Bountiful, Utah, where he was known for his lively spirit, keeping his mother on her toes and playing pranks on his sisters. As a teenager, Curt was active in the Boy Scouts, enjoying long bike rides with his troop and even crafting his own canoe. He served as the basketball team manager at Bountiful High School, from which he graduated in 1973.

Curt had a deep love for the outdoors, nurtured by hunting, fishing, and camping trips with his father continuing that tradition with his family. His passion for guns and trapping led him to often say he was born 100 years too late, as he admired the ways of the mountain men.

On August 9, 1974, Curt married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Hilton, in the Salt Lake Temple. They celebrated 50 wonderful years together. The couple initially lived in Cedar City, Utah, where Curt worked for the family business, Apex Building Specialties. They later moved to Riverton, Utah, for nine years before settling in Morgan, Utah, where they raised their three children. After 35 years in Morgan, Curt and Margaret moved to Roosevelt, Utah, to be closer to family.

Curt took over Apex Building Specialties after his father’s passing in 1988, running the business until its closure in 2000. He then pursued further education, earning a machinist degree, a CDL license, and certification in gunsmithing. Curt worked in security and then worked construction driving dump truck. Eventually, he was able to work in his dream job selling and discussing guns for Cabela’s and then as a civil contractor at Hill Field Air Force Base where he retired in 2022.

Curt is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret Hayes of Roosevelt, Utah; his son Gordon (Jessica) Hayes of West Jordan, Utah; his daughter Katie (Robert) Caldwell of Bluebell, Utah; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his sisters Diana (Allen) Wilcox of Bountiful, Utah, and Jolene (Jack) Carter of Morgan, Utah. He was preceded in death by his daughter Michelle (Matt) James, his father Ronald Eugene Hayes, and his mother Julia-Ann Lawrence Hayes.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024, at the Morgan 5th Ward Chapel. A viewing will take place the evening before, on October 27, 2024, at Walker Mortuary from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, and on the day of the funeral from 9:45 to 10:45 AM at the church.
