Dean Rock

Our loving, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather passed to the other side of the veil to be with his sweetheart. Laurel Dean Rock passed away on November 12, 2011 due to incidents of age. Dean was born May 6, 1921, to Laurel and Leatha Phillips Rock in Morgan, Utah. He graduated from Morgan High School and LDS Seminary in 1940.

He married the love of his life Myrtle Gleason on April 5, 1942 at the home of her parents in Garland Utah. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 13, 1949. They spent 67 wonderful years together.

They lived in Morgan where they raised five children and built a home in Mountain Green where he did much of the work himself. He was always proud of his heritage and the life-long friends he made in Morgan and Mtn. Green.

In his early years he helped his dad on the farm. He loved to fish and hunt with his dad and brother, and later with his sons and grandsons. He learned to play the Harmonica in elementary school and played often for family and friends. In his youth, Dean enjoyed a good boxing match, a game of checkers, pinochle and mahjong (pung) with his dad and friends - and later in life with his children and grandchildren.

He loved family reunions, gardening, camping, and traveling much of North America with his sweetheart. He spent winters in Ivins, Utah, golfing and going to garage sales. They served a mission for the LDS Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. He spent 60 plus years in the Boy Scouts of America where he was a leader, and Merit Badge Counselor. He earned his Silver Beaver Award, Wood Badge, and the 50 mile Hikers Award. He was proud of his handmade cane which showed every event of Scouting in his life. He rafted the Colorado River before Lake Powell was completed, and talked about it often in all of his many stories he had to tell. He served in the CCC and enlisted in the Navy during WW II. He worked and retired from HAFB as a Logistics Specialist after 36 years. In his later life he finished and compiled many histories on family members.

He loved his children, helping each of them to build or remodel their homes - always willing to help and try to fix anything he could. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren so much, and they all knew that he loved each one of them.

Survived by his five children and spouses DeAnn (Rick) Fresh, Linda (Craig) Kendell, John (Susan) Rock, Peter (Melanie) Rock and Julie (Bart) Kendell; 38 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren, and 14 great great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother, Sherman; sisters, Janet, Dorthy, and Dorlene; and one grandson in-law, Mark Cragun.

A heartfelt thanks to Gayle Zetner his in-home care giver; CNS Hospice; Carol Furland; the Zuechs; all his neighbors and ward members that kept a careful watch on him; and the emergency responders from Morgan County and the caring staff at McKay Dee Hospital Emergency.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America or the LDS Church First-Time Temple Fund.

Services will be held Friday November 18, 2011 at the Highland Ward Chapel, 5378 W. Old Highway Road in Mtn Green at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held Thursday, November 17 from 6 to 8 PM at Walker Mortuary in Morgan, Utah and from 9:45 to 10:45 on Friday prior to the services at the church.
