Erma was born in Holladay, Utah to Lorenzo Stoddard and Lavona Rugg. She grew up in Salt Lake City as the oldest of 10 children which kept her busy. She enjoyed going to movies, sledding and swimming. She spent time as a lifeguard and had a love of the water that she passed on to her family. She doctored the animals on the farm and shared her interest in medicine with many of her grandkids. She would teach those interested how to give the animals shots.
When Erma turned 18, she eloped with her sweetheart Bud Carter to Elko, Nevada. They settled in Morgan for a few months, then moved to the old log cabin in Porterville where Kathy and Jack joined the family. They later built a home just up the lane where they happily lived out the rest of their lives. They were married for 65 years when Bud passed.
After marrying Bud, Erma’s life changed from that of a city girl to a country gal. Her skills were many and she thrived. She was a fabulous cook and loved to serve her family and others by preparing meals. She was an amazing seamstress and didn’t even need to use a pattern. She always got a women’s magazine so she could sew up the latest fashion for her and her family. She made her daughter Kathy’s wedding dress. She loved canning and canned fruit, vegetables and meats. She made yummy jam that kept Bud smiling. Her son-in-law Rob joined in her excitement with canning and they loved sharing ideas and recipes. Erma used her cooking and sewing skills to teach 4-H in Porterville. Many youths learned these skills from Erma in the old log cabin.
Erma joined the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints when she was 19 and spent her life in service. She loved the Lord and her scriptures. Bud and Erma were sealed in the Temple later in their life. She loved to pray and knew there is power in prayer and used it often. She had GREAT faith.
She became an Avon lady when she was 25 and continued this passion into her late 70s. When her kids were raised, she became the Morgan County Water Deputy. She enjoyed both jobs and they brought her happiness.
She loved being at Family Tree and teased and joked with those that helped her. She was known as the wildcard. Thanks to all those that loved and cared for mom. Her great grandkids drew pictures and put them on her walls at Family Tree, they were covered in pictures and she called it her “Wall of Love”. How she loved those pictures and her family.
Surviving Erma are her children Kathy Beveridge, Jack (Jolene) Carter, 12 grandkids, 32 great grandkids and 1 great, great granddaughter. Her sisters Betty, LaRue and Barbara and her brothers John and Robert.
She is preceded in death by her Husband Bud Carter, son-in-law Robert Beveridge, Parents Ren and Lavona, sisters Laura, Lorna and Beth, and brother Lorenzo.
