He Started working at a young age for J. Williams & Sons, delivering flyers for the store. As a young boy he enjoyed skiing, fishing, playing the piano, and scouting. He gave his mother credit for helping him become one of Morgan's first Eagle Scouts.
Shortly after graduating from Morgan High School in May 1942, he enlisted in The U.S. Navy. He served on Escort Duty in the Atlantic until his ship was lost to a German U-Boat. He was then assigned to the Pacific Theatre where his ship, one of many landing crafts, was involved in the liberation of the Philippines.
