Gary David Toone – loving husband, father, grandpa, son, brother, uncle, and friend - passed away peacefully after a long, hard battle with cancer on Monday, April 6, 2020.
Gary was born on May 14, 1955 in Ogden, Utah to Sherm and Myra Toone of Croydon. He spent his childhood years in Croydon, riding horses with his Grandpa Newt. He loved spending his time outdoors in the mountains, hunting, fishing, and causing havoc with his brothers. One of Gary’s proudest moments as a child was going to California to play in the Little League World Series. He would light up like a light when sharing this memory with his family.
Gary attended Morgan High School where he met Sandy Mortenson. They later married and had 3 boys – He took great pride in his children and would tell everyone he met, “I have three great boys and I taught them everything not to do.” He then entered his career as a heavy equipment mechanic. He honored his work and would often tell people that he received more diplomas from work than from school. Gary retired from H&E Equipment after 35 years of service. Gary was later divorced.
In 1995 he met his beloved sweetheart, Marlene Jones. They were married on the ‘12th of never’ – July 12, 2002. Gary and Marlene shared many wonderful memories together. You would never see one of them without the other – they were best friends. They enjoyed camping and riding four-wheelers up Deep Creek with family and friends. They spent many weekends in their trailer at Lava Hot Springs or attending hill climbs. They loved spending time outdoors. They also shared many dogs together. Gary loved his dogs all the way from Bud Dog to Sparky, and many in between.
Some of Gary’s fondest memories were created with his 3 boys. The four of them spent a lot of time together – hunting, fishing, building derby cars, playing or watching sports, teasing, and joking. Gary was sure to make everyone around him laugh; he could never be taken seriously.
Gary was a wonderful Grandpa. He was very proud of his grandchildren. He often invited them over for barbeques. He made the best hamburgers and Dutch oven meals. Grandpa was the best cook around – he took pride in his cooking. His pantry was always full of treats to share. He enjoyed supporting his grandkids by attending ball games, graduations, and birthday parties. He would always dance and sing his heart out with his grandchildren, sharing his favorite Neil Young, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Guns N Roses songs. His hugs brought wisdom, happiness, warmth, and love. He was the very best Grandpa.
Gary is survived by his wife Marlene, children Michael (Cissy), Tyler (Desirae), and Casey (Lyndzee), siblings Tammy, Troy, and Jennifer, and 11 precious grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Sherm and Myra, and brother Brad.
Special thanks to the many care givers at Utah Hematology Oncology, the Morgan County EMTs, and Walker Mortuary for their compassionate service.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 10, 2020.
