Gilbert Martinez

August 25, 1943 — June 16, 2021

MORGAN- Our loving father, grandpa, and great-grandpa, Gilbert Martinez, was greeted by many angels when he left this earth on June 16, 2021.  He was born on August 25, 1943 to Patricio and Jesusita Archuleta Martinez in Saguache, CO.  Gilbert lived his early childhood years on the ranch in Moffat, CO.  He had so many fond memories growing up with his siblings while helping his dad herd sheep.  It’s a wonder how those kids survived all of the shenanigans they got themselves into.  He attended school in Moffat and then later Davis High School, when the family moved to Utah.

Gilbert had his own salon where he did hair for over 20 years.  He would enter hair shows to showcase his talent.  One of his beautiful hair models, Pat Hansen, caught his eye and he soon married her.  He and Pat were married and raised their children in Morgan, UT.  They were later divorced.

Gilbert enjoyed dancing, playing golf, spending time with family, going camping and fishing, and mining for gold.  He loved road trips, reading, and learning about history, and following the Utah Jazz.

Family was a priority to Gilbert.  Anyone who knew him witnessed the bond he had with his brothers.  Until the day he passed, they would all talk on the phone daily or meet up for a meal.  This example has continued through the next generation.

Gilbert was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  He was always patient, caring, and loving in the attention he gave his family.  Gilbert was a natural people person.  He had a way of making everyone laugh and feel welcome.

Many adventures were had with his longtime sweetheart, Sandra West.  They enjoyed each other’s company while traveling, going on 4-wheeler rides, and watching Jazz games.

Gilbert is survived by his children Wade C. Rockwood, Jeffery Gilbert Martinez, and Lisa (Stan) Sommers. His grandchildren are Jeffery Gilberto Martinez Jr., Morgan Ashley Martinez, Cole Stanley Sommers, and Shelby K. Sommers.  He has two great-grandchildren, Maya Nicole Martinez and Dominic Gilberto Martinez. Gilbert is also survived by his brothers Chris Martinez and Jake Martinez. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Betty, Priscilla, and Mariann, and brother, Fred.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Friday, June 25, 2021, from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Milton Park (1165 N. Morgan Valley Drive in Morgan, UT). Please join us in honoring Gilbert by wearing your favorite color, his favorite color-blue, some Jazz attire, or your favorite hat.

Gilbert will be cremated and his remains will be returned to his hometown in Colorado.
