John Irwin

MORGAN a�" John Conrad Irwin, Jr., 96, died July 9, 2012 at his home in Morgan, Utah. He was born Nov. 2, 1915 in Salt Lake City, Utah to John Conrad, Sr., and Eleanor Elizabeth Collett Irwin.

John's family moved to Devils Slide, Utah where he attended schools in Morgan County. He attended Grades 1 through 7 in Devils Slide and graduated from Morgan High School in 1934. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the German-Austrian mission from 1935 to 1938. He also served in the Army/Air Force as an X-Ray Technician during World War II stateside. He was then sent to the Philippines, 249th General Hospital and where he worked up to a Tech 4.

On January 24, 1944, he married Arlene Follett in the Mesa Arizona Temple. John and Arlene lived in several different cities while John was still serving in the Armed Forces including Blythe California, Walla Walla, Washington and Fort Lewis, Washington when he was sent overseas. When John was released in 1946 they moved to Devils Slide until 1950.

In 1950 John and Arlene moved into their new home in Morgan that they had built.

John was employed at Ideal Cement plant in Devils Slide where he started tying sacks at age 12. He returned to the cement plant after his mission and then again after his service in the Army / Air Force. He retired in 1981 as a Chemist after 47 years of employment.

He and Arlene served two LDS missions together: Europe Central District Mission (Croatia, Zagreb Yugoslavia) in 1981 to 1983 and the German-Dusseldorf Mission in 1990 to 1992.

John served in many stake and ward positions in the church. He especially loved serving as an ordinance worker in the Ogden Temple for 18 years. His unwavering testimony and powerful example are truly his legacy.

He was a photographer and enjoyed working in his dark room that he had created to develop his own pictures. He took most of the missionary photos for Morgan missionaries in the era of 1960 to 1980 and wouldn't charge a dime. He also photographed many weddings and other events around Morgan. He loved walking and hiking. There was never a hill he wouldn't want to climb. He hiked until he was in his nineties.

He was a member of the Morgan Lion's Club where he served as the secretary, and was a member for over 50 years. He was also a member of the America Legion.

John and Arlene loved to travel and owned several motor homes (one of which he converted from a school bus). They also enjoyed his association in the Wasatch Wagons chapter of the Good Sam Club. John is survived by his wife, Arlene; five children: Suzanne (Richard) Middleton of North Ogden; John Richard (Kathy) Irwin of Riverdale; Becky (Rocky) Johnson of Green River, Wyoming; Robert Follett (Phyllis) Irwin of Lander, Wyoming; and Janene (Mark) Walker of Morgan; 20 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Frances Marian Warwood of Bountiful.

The family would like to thank Inspiration Hospice for their personal care, especially Ann.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 11 am at the Rock Chapel, 10 W. Young Street, Morgan. Friends and family may attend a viewing Friday from 6 to 8 at Walker Mortuary in Morgan and Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 am at the church.
