MORGAN a�" Ruth Marie Johnson Tonks passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2009 after a long trial with dementia. Marie was born on May 18, 1917 to Roy Wilford Johnson and Laura Fern Stoddard in Milton, Utah. She married Lewis Tonks in Morgan, Utah on October 10, 1938. Their vows were later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Lewis passed away on December 29, 2004. Marie worked at the Ogden Arsenal from 1943 to 1948 and at Hill Air Force Base from 1953 until she retired in 1969. She was a charter member of the Morgan BPW serving as President, Vice-president and on many committees, including chairman of the Morgan Women's Legislative Council for many years. She served as Morgan County Campaign Chairman for the American Cancer Society and assisted in Red Cross Volunteer work. She was on the Morgan County Mental Health Council for the youth and served on the Governor's Advisory council.
Marie enjoyed golfing and served as President and tournament chairman of the Round Valley Ladies Golf Association. She also enjoyed her many church callings over the years a�" the most memorable being the YWMIA. She often recalled the lovely young women she had the privilege of working with.
She had many talents; over the years, family and friends have been recipients of her beautiful handiwork, which includes knitting, needlepoint, embroidery, Japanese silk bunka pictures and pieced quilt-tops. She loved to read and always had a book by her bedside. Marie has always been known for her quick wit and great sense of humor; she had a special talent for coming up with something humorous to say at just the right moment. She loved her grandchildren and had special treats and surprises for them as they were growing.
She is survived by her son, Bruce (Carol) Tonks, Round Valley; three grandchildren: Kirk Tonks, Fort Bridger, WY; Craig(Stephanie) Tonks, Round Valley; Vickie (Tim) Richins, Henefer, Utah; and seven great grandchildren: Colin, Allison, Austin and Kaden Tonks of Round Valley; Wyatt and Dalton Richins of Henefer, Utah and Wesley Richins serving in the North Carolina Charlotte Mission for the LDS church. Her husband; parents; two brothers; Lewis and Earl Johnson; sister, Olga Hannum preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the Morgan Rock Church. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 at Walker Mortuary in Morgan and Thursday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
