Mark Schmid

February 27, 1965 — August 24, 2021

Morgan

Mark Richard Schmid, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother, passed away peacefully at his home in Morgan, Utah on August 24, 2021, at the age of 56, after suffering from ALS.

Mark was born on February 27, 1965 in Salt Lake City, Utah to parents John Richard and Sherry Telford Schmid, as the oldest of four children. He graduated from Roy High School in 1983.

He married Charee Wilde on July 2, 1986 in the Salt Lake City Latter-day Saint temple. Charee’s life was ended too soon due to a motor vehicle accident on October 4, 1987. Mark then married Cheryl Bassett on May 17, 1990 in the Salt Lake City Latter-day Saint temple. They lived in South Weber and Heber City before making their forever home in Morgan in 1998. They had three children, who were and are the focus of their lives. Mark enjoyed working in the yard, camping with family and friends, attending his children’s sporting and school events, and most recently completed his goal of riding his motorcycle in all forty-eight mainland states with his wife, all within the last three years of his life.

Their home in Morgan includes a small family farm, Half Acre Hobby, which was home to a zoo of animals over the years, including emus, alpacas, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, pigs, miniature horses, turkeys, guinea hens, parakeets, tortoises, rabbits, dogs, cats, and guinea pigs. Mark was a strong supporter of 4-H, and devoted countless hours helping his children raise and show pigs in the Morgan County Fair, the “Schmid Schwine". He always noted he was raising children, not animals. Up until his passing, Mark had worked endlessly to make his house and yard a place for his family to come together and enjoy for decades to come. Anyone who visits the home will always be reminded of Mark and his legacy. His children have childhood memories to last a lifetime.

Mark worked as a building official and inspector for Morgan City for twenty-six years, including as the Director of Public Works and Floodplains Administrator. More notably worked with the Attorney General’s office on several building code investigations. He furthered his education with a degree in Construction Management from Weber State University. He afterwards taught building code courses there as an adjunct professor. He taught his children the importance of an education and always reminded and joked with them to graduate from college before he did, at the age of 40. Mark was also active in his church, fulfilling callings of Building Cleaning Coordinator, Ward Clerk, Sunday School Presidency, Cub Scouts, Elder’s Quorum Presidency, and most recently Gospel Doctrine Teacher.

He is survived by his wife Cheryl, daughters Cheyenne (Keyton) Clayson and Morgan (Jake) Peterson, son Wade (Jessika) Schmid, grandsons Jameson Richard and Caleb Mark, parents John Richard and Sherry Telford Schmid, siblings Stephanie (Craig) Tonks, Nancy (Justin) Mott, and John (Amy) Schmid, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. All of whom look forward to the most happiest reunion in the future, and are so grateful for the reunion Mark is now experiencing with his first wife, Charee, and all his grandparents. Families are truly together forever.

We would like to thank Dr. Seth Lewis for all the years he has taken care of Mark, and for the wonderful nurse Corey with Encompass hospice.
