MORGAN - Max Lorraine Porter died on February 11, 2009 at the home of his daughter in Morgan, Utah. He was born on January 5, 1930 in Porterville, Utah to Lawrence Addison Porter and Gertrude Alice (Florence) Porter. He was the youngest of 13 children.
Max grew up on the family farm in Porterville and attended Morgan Grade School and Morgan High School through the eighth grade.
He worked for a short time at the Army Depot in Ogden, worked on a construction crew at the cement plant and later at the cement plant for about two years. At various times he also worked herding sheep, working of course on the family farm hoeing cabbage, cauliflower and much more. His family was a close and loving family and they all pitched in when needed.
Max enlisted in the United States Air Force on April 13, 1951 at the ripe ole age of 21. He was sent to San Antonio, Texas for Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base for three months and then to August, Georgia for another four months. After basic training, Max was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base until 1977. While stationed in San Antonio, Max met his wife Ann Marie Osborn and they were married on August 6, 1953.
Max served his country proudly, doing a tour of duty in Korea during the war, and another tour in Turkey. While in the Air Force, he received numerous recognitions, awards and medals, one of which is the Air Force Commendation Medal he received during his two year tour in Ankara, Turkey.
Max and Ann raised three daughters, Sandra Lee Porter (Sowell), Kathryn Sue Porter (Schneider) and Barbara Kay Porter (Flowers).
Max was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Addison Porter and Gertrude Alice Porter; Ann Marie Porter (his wife of 51 years); his eldest daughter, Sandra Lee Sowell; his brothers: Clyde Orlando Porter, Charles Gilbert Porter, William Francis (Frank) Porter, Lawrence Russell Porter, Farrell Dee Porter, Robert (Bob) Doyle Porter and Walter Dale Porter; and his sisters: Florence (Faun) Porter Florence and June Porter Shipley.
Max is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law: Kathryn Porter Schneider (Hugo) of Morgan, Utah; Barbara Porter Flowers (Aubrey) of Spring Branch, Texas; brother, Jay Porter of Morgan, Utah; sisters: Marjorie Porter of Citrus Heights, California; and Elaine Peck of Mountlake Terrace Washington. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Max was a member of The Alzafar Shrine, The Masons and Easter Star. He loved to fish and hunt. He could do anything with his hands and in later life, enjoyed woodcrafting.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, Feb. 16, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Walker Mortuary, 45 W. 200 N., Morgan, Utah. Friends and family may call at the mortuary on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.
Graveside services will be held in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
