Our beloved Renée Thackeray returned home to her Heavenly Father July 9, 2018, at the age of 87. Though she never had the earthly privilege of being a wife and mother, she mothered hundreds of her nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She looked for the best in others and in life, and she always found it. She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace Emanuel Thackeray and Margaret Dell Burnett Thackeray, and siblings (and their spouses) Roy Thackeray (Theta), George Thackeray (Barbara), and William Thackeray (Elsie). She is survived by siblings (and their spouses) Ralph Thackeray (NaTel), Romona Thackeray Dickson (Paul), and Samuel Thackeray (JoAnne).
Renée was born on January 27, 1931, in Croydon, Utah. She was the 3rd of 7 children born to Horace and Margaret Thackeray. Renée graduated from Morgan High in 1949. She went on to receive her BS in Home Economics from BYU in 1953. In July of 1953 she left to serve a mission for the LDS church in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Following her mission, she received her MS degree in Clothing and Textiles from Oregon State University. She then followed her passion for teaching and taught at Chico State University, CA, and later at BYU, where she remained teaching until her retirement in 1996.
Renée lived a life of service. She constantly gave of her time, talents and financial means to many charities. One of her favorite hobbies was making quilts. She would often donate quilts to charity auctions for Primary Children’s Hospital and The Children’s Justice Center. Her quilts brought in thousands of dollars. In 2011 she was awarded the Healing Hearts award by The Children’s Justice Center for her years of service. She did all this despite constant pain from arthritis and many other physical ailments throughout the years. She considered quilting her medicine.
Renée has left a legacy of love, faith, and enduring to the end. She brought a beautiful light into this world and into the lives of all who knew her. We are so grateful to have been part of the gracious and courageous life of Renée Thackeray.
Special thank you to the staff of the Ashford Assisted Living Center and Brighton Home Health & Hospice for their excellent care.
